If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything

Today I participated and was one of the leaders of the Student Association Unity Rally. The purpose of this rally was to promote diversity at UB ( a predominantly white school). In the schools newspaper, The Spectrum, the Black Student Union was attacked and called a "racist organization". They also attacked the LGBTA (Lesbian, Gay, BiSexual, Transgendered Alliance) by saying that gay people put "their gender over their duty to be a human" by joining a club such as LGBTA. The editor that wrote this opinion piece has chosen to completely ignore the reason's that these clubs were started. All of the clubs that participated in today's rally all began because students of color and gay students had no voice, especially at this university. BSU was founded in 1967 at the tip end of the civil rights movement and at the dawn of the Black Panther Movement during a time of civil unrest and social inequality. Today we have evolved as a club whose main focus is to teach UB Students about black culture and to give black students an outlet to be themselves. We discuss topics that affect black people but we invite all to join so they can learn about the culture. When I first came to UB, I met students who had never dealt with a person of color on a personal basis. Some had never even seen a black person in person. What type of shit is that?? This is why clubs such as BSU exist. The racist bastards at the Spectrum will never know what it's like to sit in a classroom and be the only black student and feeling like whatever you say speaks for the entire race. I don't expect them to understand, they are all kids that benefit from white privelage. I'm glad my organization as well as several others got a chance to get together to let UB students know the reason why we exist and to prove that none of us are racist organizations.
